Fish mongers used to be on every high street - no matter how far from the sea the high street was. Their shops were open fronted all year round. They opened early and closed when the slap was empty, washing it down into the gutter with buckets of boiling hot water.
For an island people, the British seem to have gone off fish unless it is in batter, or frozen in sad little oblongs. Most people could not even name a fish past a cod or a salmon.
But fish mongers have not gone completely - people just need a nudge to start eating fish again.
